Sowing the Seeds of Innovation: Agricultural University of Athens Hosts cutting-edge event last December
This initiative, organized by EIT Food Greece Hub, aims to transfer knowledge and innovation to the final recipients of the primary sector, the farmers.
"Sowing the Seeds of Innovation" was an initiative organised by EIT Food, in collaboration with its hub in Greece. The event was held at the Agricultural University of Athens. During his opening remarks speech, Lefteris Avgenakis, the Minister of Rural Development and Food, highlighted the imperative of linking innovation and sustainability in the primary sector.
"We will succeed in reducing imports and conserving resources by increasing yields, thereby rendering the sector sustainable and attractive for new investments."
Discussing technology in the primary sector, Mr. Avgenakis pointed out that it will contribute to lowering production costs and improving the quality of products.
He emphasized that the utilization of innovation in the agricultural sector will "bolster its overall sustainability," a crucial requirement today as "climate and energy crises have made the work of producers increasingly challenging in recent years."
On his part, the head of the EIT Food hub in Greece and co-founder of IDGC, Michalis Stangos, highlighted that the entire effort commenced about two years ago as a Hub.
"We worked diligently over these years on this 'journey' to develop an innovation ecosystem," he mentioned, adding that "with the Agricultural University and other companies, we established a company aiming to provide added value and real solutions."

Thomas Bartzanas, who presented the three pillars of the programme: digital transformation, sustainability of the primary sector, and new technologies, stated that:
"The Agricultural University supports the entire effort of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food to assist Greek farmers in becoming more effective and sustainable,"
