Synopsis

Takeaway points:

  • 1/3 of all food is wasted, and 40% of that is fresh produce. One reason for that is that the shelf life of fresh produce can vary a lot, for instance due to seasonality, weather, processing, storage and transport. This means it is often difficult to accurately determine the shelf life of individual products.
  • RisingFoodStar OneThird have developed a method to predict the shelf life of fresh produce using an AI scanner in real time. The scanner uses infrared spectroscopy to look inside of the product and measure the chemical processes happening within it. This is then analysed by the AI technology which estimates the remaining shelf life.
  • This technology is helping growers, distributors and retailers to make rapid informed decisions about the shelf life of fresh produce and take immediate action to avoid food loss.
